Week 9 Review (#30 Miami University)
The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies season rolled on this past weekend as the team took a road trip down to Oxford, Ohio, for a two-game set against #30 Miami University (Ohio). The non-conference series featured one of three teams that are vying for the Indiana Collegiate Hockey Conference (ICHC) title. Coach Stirling and his staff were 5-3-0 going into the weekend, which saw two late-night games for the series.
In the first game of the series, the Golden Grizzlies started hot in the first period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Cam Laufer and Austin Fertik scored goals in the period. After the first period, however, the day of travel would start to get to Oakland on the ice. Miami would score two in the second period and tie the game. A lone goal from Jack Abbo would break the tie late in the second period. A scoreless third period allowed the Grizzlies to find their 11th win of the season with a narrow victory of 3-2. In goal, Max Pierce pitched in with a 21-save performance and gathered his seventh win of the season. Oakland outshot Miami 36-23.
On Saturday, the Golden Grizzlies had a long day, which saw the team spend some time at the miniature golf course before the 9:30 PM late-night puck drop. The team would put together a better and more acceptable performance in game two of the series, which saw the Golden Grizzlies win 6-0. The Grizzlies would jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first period with goals coming from Tommy Davis, Jules Sainte-Marie, and Share Arbour. The team would see three more goals throughout the remainder of the game. Those three were contributed by Austin Fertik, Arbour (2nd of the game,) and Reiss Williams. In goal, Caleb Godlewski posted his first shutout of the season in a 20-save performance. The Grizzlies would outshoot the Redhawks 43-20 in the contest.
Week 10 Preview (#55 Central Michigan University)
The Golden Grizzlies’ season continues this upcoming weekend as the team takes on MCHC-East opponent #55 Central Michigan University. Central Michigan comes in with some marquee wins against Michigan State and Notre Dame early in the season. Over the past two weekends, the Chippewas were swept by #26 Adrian and split with #88 Robert Morris. As always, the Chippewas tend to play Oakland in tight matchups and consistently have a great showing at their home arena. The teams will play at Buffalo Wild Wings Arena on Friday night and then will return to Martin Ice Arena in Mount Pleasant for a Saturday afternoon game. Going into the series, coach Stirling and his staff are 8-6-0 against CMU all-time, including a 6-1 victory and a 9-0 victory last season. The Chippewas are led by returning head coach Brennan Martin.
Looking at CMU: CMU has many familiar names on its roster, as they are local players, and the teams are very familiar with each other. Leading the way for the Chippewas is returning forward #13 Jayce Johnson, who has 10 points in 11 games played so far. Joining Johnson are new players in RJ Galacz and Brennan Morgan, who are both products of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s High School. Galacz leads the team with 12 points in 17 games played. The Chippewas are second in the MCHC–East in penalty minutes with 231 in the 17 games, which is in the top 15 in men’s ACHA Division 3. In goal for Central, the returning tandem of #35 Caleb Woolery and #30 Isaac Gleissner have played every game this season. Below are their numbers through the early portion of the season:
- #35 Caleb Woolery (GP: 10, 2-7-0, GAA: 3.52, SV%: 91.4%)
- #31 Isaac Gleissner (GP: 9, 3-4-1, GAA: 3.78, SV%: 91.3%)
